Word Counter

Count words, characters, and lines in a block of text.

What is the Word Counter?

A word counter measures the length of a piece of text - its word, character, and line counts. Writers, students, and SEO specialists use it to meet length limits for essays, meta descriptions, tweets, and ad copy, and to estimate reading time.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text into the box.
  2. Click Count.
  3. Read the word, character, and line totals below.

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace - spaces, tabs, and line breaks - so repeated spaces do not inflate the count.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

The character count includes every character, including spaces and tabs. The "no spaces" count excludes spaces and tabs, which is often what platforms with strict limits measure.

Is there a word or character limit?

No. You can paste anything from a tweet to a full article or document.

Is my text stored?

No. The counts are computed for the text you submit and nothing is saved.
